| Nothing short of exhilarating were the two performances of John Corigliano's Clarinet Concerto. A warm beautiful tone, blended with fluid technique and melodic elegance, characterizes the artistry of clarinetist David Callaway. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, and currently a resident of New York City, Mr. Callaway has previously been the recipient of many awards and honors, including a Fulbright fellowship to study Chinese traditional music in Taiwan. He recieved a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Ricardo Morales, Principal Clarinetist of the Philadelphia Orchestra and former Principal Clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Mr. Callaway's debut recital was given at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall in New York City, as Winner of the Artist International Competition. In addition, he gave two performances of John Corigliano's Clarinet Concerto, as Winner of the Manhattan School's Concerto Competition, and performed Debussy’s Premiére Rhapsodie as the Winner of the Young Artist Competition at the University of South Carolina. His orchestral experience includes performances of Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier with the Atlanta Opera Orchestra, the Orlando Symphony, the South Carolina Philharmonic, and the Columbia Lyric Opera Orchestra. He has performed under the batons of such conductors as Kurt Masur, Jerzy Semkow, Jilius Rudel, and Fred Scott. As a chamber musician, Mr. Callaway has performed with the New York Philomusica, the New Jersey Symphony, the South Carolina Woodwind Quintet, and more frequently as guest artist with the Adirondack Ensemble and the Devienne Trio. His teachers have included Ricardo Morales, David Krakauer, Douglas Graham, and Laura Ardan, Principal Clarinetist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Committed to academics, he has served on the Fulbright Committee in Taiwan, is a frequent adjudicator, and often serves as an advisor to students. In addition to teaching privately, Mr. Callaway has taught clarinet at Vassar and Bard Colleges, as well as at the Manhattan School of Music. |
